The horse's basic gaits.
Most horses have four speeds.
The Walk
The walk is a gait of four beats marked by the placing of each lateral pair of hooves.
The Trot
The trot is a two-beat gait. One diagonal pair of legs is placed down simultaneously and then, following a moment of suspension, the horse springs onto the beat as the left fore and right hind touch the ground.
The Canter
The canter is a three-beat gait, the horse leading with the right foreleg when circling to the right and vice-versa.
The Gallop
The gallop is the fastest of the four natural gaits. It is a four-beat pace, but there are variations in the sequence, according to the speed.
