Understanding your horse's emotional needs and physical limitations can help make you a better rider.
The Emotional Side
The Physical Side

Every horse needs a leader. Make sure he knows you're up to the task. When a human fails to gain a horse's respect early on in the relationship, the horse automatically takes charge. Equines feel safest when they have a strong leader making decisions for them and helping them determine what is and what isn't dangerous. We must convince the horse we are confident and knowledgeable and worthy of their trust.

"I have a blind spot directly in front of me, and on my flanks. I depend on you to watch out for me."

"I'm classified as prey, not as a predator. My instinct is to flee first and ask questions later."

"Because I'm a herd animal, I don't like being alone. I feel safer when I'm with my own kind."
